We Have a Little Baby (Dreidel Song)

To the tune of I Have a Little Dreidel

This one’s got nothing to do with atheism… I just love singing it to my daughter.

They say that babies love to hear songs with their own names in them, so I usually use “Orli” in place of “baby” throughout. But you can just use baby if your child’s name doesn’t fit well with the tune – it’s very sweet that way too.

We have a little baby
we made you out of clay
now you’re dry and ready
so baby we do play

Oh, baby baby baby
we made you out of clay
now you’re dry and ready
and baby we do play

You have a lovely body
with a face so round and sweet
when you get all tired
you drop and then we sleep

Oh, baby, baby, baby
your face so round and sweet
when you get all tired
you drop and then we sleep

Our baby’s sometimes playful
you love to dance and spin
a happy game of baby
come play now let’s begin

Oh baby, baby, baby
you love to dance and spin
baby, baby, baby
come play now let’s begin

2016 update:
I sang this song regularly throughout Orli’s newborn months. I realized when she was eight months old that it could be a response to the biblical story of Adam being formed from earth while Eve was created from his rib. Perhaps being created from a rib is a higher origin than from earth, perhaps the earth is the higher origin, or perhaps they’re simply different. But either way, our Orli would challenge gender norms.
